The Stephenville Honeybees spurred an impressive second-quarter run but fell short Friday to No. 3 Abilene Wylie 54-36 in a Class 3A Region I semifinal at United Spirit Arena.

Wylie (29-5) maintained a 37-27 lead after the third quarter, led by senior forward Punkin Mack, who finshed with 17 points.

Mack and junior guard Peyton Sanders carried tempo throughout the game for Wylie, combining for 34 of the Bulldogs’ 54 points.

Tiara Green led the response by the Honeybees (21-13) with nine first-half points.

“We did a better job of trying to penetrate and kick it out and getting open looks,” Stephenville coach Alan Thorpe said of the Honeybees’ second-quarter run. “We just tried to tweak that a little for the second half and do a couple of things, but what we did in the first half we failed to do in the second half.”

Sanders responded for the Bulldogs with a 3-pointer on the opening shot of the second half, extending the Lady Bulldogs’ lead back to seven.

A 28-14 second-half run by Wylie put the game out of reach.
