Crowley senior Byron Cooke scored 15 points and handled the ball masterfully as the Eagles upset No. 12 Fort Worth Dunbar 62-52 in a Class 4A area-round boys basketball game Friday at Mansfield Timberview High School.

Crowley (18-11) will play Waco (22-8) in the Region I quarterfinals at a time and site to be determined.

Cooke led the Eagles in scoring, but his ability to handle the ball against Dunbar’s pressing defense was the difference.

The Eagles spread the floor and were deliberate in working the Wildcats’ defense for a good shot that many times wound up in a layup.

“The kids executed our game plan almost to perfection, besides missing the free throws,” said Crowley coach Alfred Jones whose team went 23-of-44 from the line. “They’re buying in and doing what I’m asking them to do and they’re coming together and jelling and doing the right things.”

Logan Ray of Dunbar (23-5) opened the game with a 3-pointer and Dunbar held an early 10-6 first quarter lead before Crowley used a 7-0 run to close the quarter with a 13-10 lead.

Dunbar took a brief 31-30 lead with 2:59 left in the third quarter, but Crowley answered with an 8-0 run and never trailed again.

Cooke scored seven consecutive points for the Eagles early in the fourth quarter as Crowley’s lead swelled to 11 points.

Dunbar didn’t shoot well most of the night and couldn’t make up the difference, especially with Alfred Jones’ “double-double machine” Markus Jones clearing the boards. Markus Jones finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds for Crowley

Dunbar’s Dennis Jones scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half.
