Matthew McGowan’s nine points in overtime led Waco to a 75-70 victory over Trophy Club Nelson on Friday in a Class 4A area-round playoff game at Glen Rose High School.

Trailing by two with seven seconds remaining in regulation, Waco’s Doug Canada found himself with the ball in the paint after a missed shot and managed to toss up the game-tying basket as time expired.

McGowan rose to the occasion in overtime.

“We refused to lose and I did what I had to do to win tonight,” said McGowan, who finished with a team-high 27 points.

Waco (22-7) was coming off a bi-district victory over Fort Worth Arlington Heights in which it scored 94 points in regulation. Nelson (24-8) scored 46 points in its victory over Fort Worth Eastern Hills.

Emmanuel Nzekwesi led the Bobcats. The 6-foot-7 forward finished with 29 points, 22 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Waco will face Crowley in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals. A location and time has not been determined.
