Ka’Juan Malveau fueled Everman in the first half by scoring 21 points, including five 3-pointers, and then he got some help from teammates in the second half as the Bulldogs knocked off Denton Guyer 71-55 Friday in a Class 4A area-round playoff game at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School.

Everman (26-3) used a suffocating defense to limit Guyer (18-11) to just four points in the third quarter and 11 in the first 12 minutes of the second half as the Bulldogs opened a 20-point lead.

“We emphasized defense at the half as they got to the paint way too much in the first half,” Everman coach Jay Mathieson said. “We did a much better job of getting up on them and not letting them drive to the basket in the third quarter.”

Malveau finished the game with 27 points, and Davion Eleston added 12. Six other Bulldogs got in on the scoring as they used a 19-4 third quarter run to break open what had been a five-point lead at the half.

“Ke’Juan was hot early and made some big shots for us when he got open,” Mathieson said. “In the second half, it was more of a team effort where everyone pitched in.”

With the win, Everman, No. 13 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state poll, advances to meet Trimble Tech in a regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday.

Malveau helped Everman open a 14-8 first quarter lead as he scored 12 of their points. His basket just 19 seconds into the game gave the Bulldogs a lead they would never lose.
