The Fort Worth Trimble Tech girls had advanced farther in the playoffs than any team in school history, but their season was eight minutes from ending Friday night against El Paso Burges.

The Bulldogs trailed 42-37. They were bigger and faster than Burges, but for the second and third quarters, they weren’t better, getting outscored 35-21 in that span. Trimble Tech coach Derrick Robertson passed along a simple reminder to his team heading into the fourth quarter.

“I told them to seize the moment,” Robertson said. “Getting past the second round was the furthest our Bulldogs had ever been.”

Trimble Tech rallied for a 56-51 win over Burges in the Class 4A Region I semifinals, advancing to face Canyon (31-4) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the finals. The winner will advance to next week’s state tournament.

Trimble Tech led Burges 16-7 after the first quarter, but Burges stayed within striking distance and ended the half on a 6-0 run to pull within 28-26 at the half.

Burges took its first lead of the game early in the third on back-to-back 3-pointers and continued to add to its lead.

Trimble Tech trailed all the way until the 3:28 mark of the fourth quarter. After tying the game at 51, LaKendra Bassett used three free throws to give Trimble Tech a 54-51 lead with just under 30 seconds left. Desirea McGinnis then rejected Victoria Lopez at the bucket to seal the win.

Crystal Allen led Trimble Tech with 14 points. Karrington Brown chipped in 13.
