Keller spoiled Fort Worth Paschal’s first trip to the playoffs in seven seasons, topping the Panthers 58-49 in a Class 5A bi-district game Tuesday at Saginaw High School.

Led by forwards Nolan Taylor and Ryan Feifer, Keller (23-5) opened the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run and held Paschal (18-11) scoreless for the first five minutes of the quarter.

Feifer and guard Brock Anders had consecutive blocks in the paint midway through the final period before Feifer scored on two dives through the lane to give Keller a 48-37 lead with 2:55 to play.

“It really just comes down to executing when you have to execute,” Keller coach Randall Durant said. “We did just enough to get this win, but it’s going to take some heavy duty mental focus to make a run.”

Taylor led Keller with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Guard Kyle Tanner chipped in with 14 points and three steals, and led Keller on its 17-6 third-quarter run after Paschal led 26-19 at halftime.

Tanner made two 3-pointers and an authoritative dunk in a span of less than two minutes to help Keller regain the the lead for good.

“He’s sneaky quick,” Durant said of Tanner. “He’ll lull you to sleep, and all of a sudden he’ll make a play you might not think he could make.”

Paschal point guard Xavier Mayes led all scorers with 19 points and hit three 3-pointers, including one from 35 feet at the buzzer to cut the Indians’ lead to 15-14 at the end of one.

“Our goal was to win a playoff game, not just to get to the playoffs, so we’re a little disappointed,” Paschal coach David Watson said. “But it was an exciting season, and when we got here, the guys didn’t play like the stage was too big, so we have something to build on.”
