HALTOM CITY — Having watched his team’s 21-point fourth-quarter lead shrink to 10, Fort Worth Dunbar senior guard Dennis Jones took over.Jones put the Wildcats, No. 12 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches State poll, on his back by scoring the team’s last 14 points on his way to a game-high 33 points in leading Dunbar to a 92-72 victory over Denton in a Class 4A Region I bi-district game Tuesday at Haltom High School.Denton (11-16) was able to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter by using its full-court press to force turnovers by Dunbar (22-4) and convert them into layups, something the Broncos didn’t do in the first three quarters.Adarian Harris led Denton with 17 points despite scoring only four in the first half after picking up three fouls in the first quarter. He scored seven points during the Broncos’ late run.Harris fouled out moments later, and Jones took control to advance the Wildcats to an area-round game against Crowley.“[Jones] did what we needed the last couple of minutes, but there were still too many easy shots and free throws he missed,” Dunbar coach Robert Hughes Jr. said. “We knew Denton was a good team and they were going to press us, but they hadn’t been pressed like we [had], and I think it wore them down.”The Broncos missed five of their last six shots and committed three turnovers while Jones was taking over late. He made five baskets and four free throws during the last 3:50.Logan Ray added 17 points and Zachary Evans 16 for Dunbar.Deamonte Hughes added 15 points for Denton, and Curtis Stevenson scored 12.
