Situational hitting at top of Wash’s list

Ron Washington wasted no time when asked what his emphasis would be this spring: Situational hitting.

That is always an emphasis for the Texas Rangers, particularly last season, but Washington said: “We didn’t do a very good job of it [last year].”

The Rangers led the American League in runs in 2012, but dropped to sixth last season. The offense went through its fair share of droughts, and the Rangers were proactive this off-season to try and combat that by adding Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo.

But, Washington said, the biggest need for situational hitting is at the bottom of the lineup with guys such as Leonys Martin, Jurickson Profar, Mitch Moreland, Geovany Soto and J.P. Arencibia.

“Those guys have to be able to do the little things,” Washington said. “They’re going to have to really, really pay attention to what the game is saying has to get done. Every time they execute, they set it up for those big boys who get paid to drive it in.”
