A Denton driver has been issued a citation for driving too fast on a slick farm road near Justin in connection with a crash that killed a Northwest High School student and seriously injured her classmate, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper said Tuesday.

April Seleska, 31, was cited for unsafe speed, DPS Sgt. Lonny Haschel said Tuesday.

“The ice on the bridge was a contributing factor,” Haschel said in an email.

No other charges are expected, but an investigation continues into the Feb. 10 crash that killed Katelyn ShyAnn Hooper, 16, of Haslet and injured her classmate Brianna Christensen, 16, of Haslet.

Christensen remained at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth on Tuesday.

Brian Christensen, Brianna’s father, issued a statement Monday that says, in part:

“Shelley and I are grateful beyond words for the support we have received over the past week. We are forever grateful that Brianna has survived this horrific accident and we are deeply saddened for the Hooper family. We will continue to pray for the Hoopers and all of ShyAnn’s family and friends. And we will continue to pray for April and her family as she struggles through this as well.

“The support and encouragement we have received from the Northwest High School student body, administration, faculty, staff, and coaches have been instrumental in our ability to cope with all that has happened. …

“The wonderful medical care group at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth including the physicians, nurses, and medical staff has been encouraging and supportive as we wait for the day ahead when Brianna will wake up. We remain optimistic and prayerful for Brianna’s recovery.”

The wreck happened about 5:30 p.m. Feb. 10 on Farm Road 156, just south of Texas 114 near Justin.

Seleska lost control of a Ford pickup and hit a Ford Contour driven by Hooper. Christensen was a passenger in the Contour, according to DPS reports.

Hooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

Seleska was also injured and was taken to a Fort Worth hospital.
