If pitching is the key to a successful season, Legacy’s softball team will again be tough to curtail.Although the Lady Broncos are a young squad after graduating eight seniors off last season’s team, there is enough talent and experience to make up some of the difference. The key to being able to repeat last year’s regional finals appearance may be watching for which younger players become diamonds-in-the-rough on the diamond.Already, the Lady Broncos were 4-2 after playing in the tough field of the Mansfield ISD Tournament last week. They picked up wins over Flower Mound, Leander Rouse and Odessa. Their losses were to 5A’s perennial contender Keller and then to Haltom. Legacy was glad to get back out onto the field after having been confined to indoor workouts due to the weather for about a week.Legacy had blanked McKinney North, 10-0 prior to the tournament.Kendall Potts returns to the mound for Legacy, but more importantly, Potts returns healthy.“We’re excited to have Kendall healthy this year,” Legacy head coach Michelle Mayfield said. Potts won’t be the only strong arm for Legacy, as Ryan Wright and Carlie Milburn are also back, completing a full return of pitchers from last season. Other returners, of which there are six, include Sara Scott, an all-district selection at second base who Legacy will rely upon for solid defensive play as well as at the plate.Reagan Wright, just a sophomore, has already collected three home runs in the early going to help pace the offense. Ryan Wright and Milburn will also help anchor the corners of the infield when not in the circle, Mayfield said. Ashley Richardson, another sophomore, will be counted upon in right or left field, but can also spend time at shortstop, Mayfield added. The key for Legacy’s success this season is remaining healthy. The Lady Broncos have just 13 on the squad this season, so depth could be a concern.“We have a lot of youth,” Mayfield said. “We’ve lost so many from last year, but we’ve got a great work ethic and we’re playing really well. It’s early, but I expect us to make another deep run in the playoffs this year.” Waiting to see which player steps up to be a solid contributor will also be an instrumental part of how far Legacy goes into an anticipated playoff run.The district schedule will start on Feb. 25 against Summit. After a game with Plano East at home, the Lady Broncos are off to the Mesquite Tournament for this weekend.
