Scoring four points on one possession is a rarity.

Maybe you get fouled on a 3-pointer, make it, then convert the free throw. Maybe you make a 2-pointer, get fouled and put one back in on the rebound.

Or maybe you get what happened to the Hurst L.D. Bell girls Friday night.

With 4:41 left in the game, Bell’s Alexis Gordon drove toward the left side of the basket for a layup, missing it but drew a foul. After the whistle, a Mansfield Timberview player was called for a technical after slamming the ball onto the court.

Gordon made all four free throws, extending Bell’s lead to 56-48 en route to a 69-58 win over Timberview (26-9) in the Class 5A area round at Grand Prairie High School.

Bell will play the winner of Saturday’s matchup between Flower Mound Marcus and DeSoto in next week’s regional quarterfinals.

Bell (27-2) coach Brock Pembleton said Gordon, a freshman, was forced to grow up this year.

“She had to step into a role with a bunch of seniors to where she couldn’t act like a freshman,” Pembleton said. “I had confidence in her. I’ve had confidence in her all year long.”

The two teams were even for the first 13 minutes of the game before Bell went on a 9-0 run to take a 25-16 lead with 3:17 left in the second quarter. Timberview would inch back, though, cutting Bell’s lead to 27-21 by halftime.

Another Bell run put the Raiders up 41-32 with 4:18 left in the third quarter. That’s when Timberview began to make a game of it again, going on a 10-0 run to take a 42-41 run. The Wolves held Bell to three points in the final 4:18 of the third quarter before the Lady Raiders surged back into the lead.

Cierra Johnson led Bell with 20 points, a game high. Gordon finished with 15 points, nine coming off free throws.
