Finishing a game short of advancing out of the 2013 NAIA Regional, the Texas Wesleyan baseball team enters this season in rebuilding mode, coach Mike Jeffcoat said.

Mother Nature has not helped the young Rams in gaining experience. Two games already have been postponed because of the weather for the 3-3 Rams, who were 42-18 last season.

“We are having to spend a lot time in our indoor facility,” Jeffcoat said. “But we are working on our consistency and getting the fundamentals down.”

Jeffcoat has leaned on the experience of senior pitcher Sam Martin, who is 2-0, allowing only one earned run on two hits through 12 2/3 innings. Martin was named pitcher of the week by the Sooner Athletic Conference after pitching a one-hit, complete game against Avila University in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday.

The Rams head into their first season in the Sooner Athletic Conference, one of the top NAIA baseball conferences, Jeffcoat said.

For the Rams to have success, Jeffcoat said the team is going to have to improve on a week-to-week basis ahead of its conference opener Feb. 28.

Wesleyan continues its preparation this weekend with a four-game slate. The Rams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday against Houston-Victoria, then host Park University at 1:30 p.m. Monday and East Central University at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Reisman wins 550th

Tarleton State responded to its first loss of the season, Feb. 5 against Midwestern State, with back-to-back wins, including Wednesday’s 72-64 victory at Angelo State which marked the 550th career victory at Tarleton for coach Lonn Reisman.

The fourth-ranked Texans (20-1, 9-1 Lone Star Conference) picked up double-digit efforts from three starters, led by De’Andre Upchurch’s 19 points. Chuck Guy added 18 while Davene Carter totaled 10.

Tarleton hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m. Saturday in the first of four regular-season games remaining. The Lone Star Conference basketball championhips begin March 5 in Allen.
