TCU women’s late charge fizzles at Kansas

The TCU women cut a late nine-point deficit to two against Kansas, but the Jayhawks finished on an 8-1 run to close out the Horned Frogs 62-53 on Wednesday at Allen Fieldhouse.

Senior center Latricia Lovings set a TCU record with a block for the 63rd consecutive game to pass Sandora Irvin’s record, and she finished with a team-high nine rebounds to go with four points.

The Frogs were denied in their first try to give coach Jeff Mittie his 300th career with at TCU.

TCU trailed 54-45 with 4:21 left before going on a 7-0 run during which the Frogs forced three turnovers to close within 54-52. But TCU wouldn’t score a field goal in the last 2 1/2 minutes, and Natalie Knight’s jumper started the Jayhawks’ end run before they finished off TCU from the free-throw line.

Sophomore guard Zahna Medley led TCU (14-10, 5-7 Big 12) with a game-high 20 points in 39 minutes, while Natalie Ventress and Chelsea Prince also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece.

TCU went just 20 of 68 (29 percent) from the field and was even worse on 3-pointers, going 3 for 14 (21 percent).

Knight led Kansas (12-13, 5-8) with 16 points, including four 3-pointers. Chelsea Gardner had 13 points and a season-high 16 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the year.

The Frogs, who led 28-24 at halftime, struggled through a slow start to the second half as Kansas built a 34-28 lead on an 18-2 run that spanned the two periods.

Medley put TCU on the board for the first time in the second half with a 3-pointer at the 14:37 mark, but Kansas answered with an Asia Boyd 3-pointer to maintain its cushion, which the Jayhawks would hold comfortably until the Frogs’ late run.
