Cowboys say they have no issues with Missouri’s Sam

The Dallas Cowboys finished tied for 25th in the NFL in sacks last year with 34 in 16 games.

If Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, the defensive player of the year in the Southeastern Conference, is available, the Cowboys say they would consider selecting him in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Sam’s announcement on Sunday that he is gay has raised questions of whether his draft status would be impacted and how he would fit in an NFL locker room.

Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones said via a text message that Sam’s sexual orientation would have no impact on the team’s evaluation of him in the draft and that the organization would have no problem welcoming a gay player in the locker room.

Addressing the defensive line and the pass rush is a huge priority for the Cowboys.

Sam is projected to be drafted between the third and fifth rounds because of concerns about his size. At 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds, Sam is supposedly too small to play defensive end and considered not fast enough to play linebacker.

That didn’t stop him from terrorizing the SEC as a pass rusher last year, notching 11.5 sacks. If he can get to the quarterback, teams will likely find a way to use him.
