ARLINGTON — Mansfield Lake Ridge clinched a playoff berth out of District 15-4A, but it took two overtimes as the Eagles defeated Arlington Seguin 46-43 in a boys basketball game Friday at Seguin High School.
Lake Ridge (19-8, 8-5 15-4A) went up 46-43 following a nice move and lay-in by Jacob Van with 50 seconds left in the second OT.
Seguin (12-16, 7-6) had three more possessions that didn’t net any points.
The Eagles’ Julian Harris blocked a shot that went out of bounds off a Cougars player with 4 seconds left in the second overtime.
Lake Ridge, however, was whistled for a 5-second violation on the in-bounds pass and turned the ball back over to Seguin under the Eagles’ basket.
The Cougars worked the ball around for a 3-point shot that just missed as the buzzer sounded. Nick Boleware led Seguin with 12 points, all on 3-pointers in the second half and overtime.
“It was exciting,” Lake Ridge coach Donte Wilson said. “That was our first two-overtime game, and the way our kids responded is a result of the way they get after each other in practice.”
Harris led Lake Ridge by scoring 12 of his game-high 14 points after halftime. Ryan Woolridge had 13 for the Eagles, and Van added 10.
Seguin is also headed to the playoffs since the Cougars swept Ennis, which at best could wind up in a fourth-place tie with Seguin.
Josh Parrish had 10 points for Seguin and sent the game to overtime with a basket with 1:01 left to tie the game at 35.
“Our kids are going to have an opportunity to represent themselves, their families, our school and our community [in the playoffs],” Wilson said. “We can’t wait.”
