Offense: The Longhorns landed a dual-threat quarterback who could push for immediate playing time in Jerrod Heard (6-foot-2, 190 pounds), who led Denton Guyer to consecutive Class 4A state titles in 2012 and 2013. Texas replenished at receiver with two upsized targets (Garrett Gray, Dorian Leonard) and game-breaker Armanti Foreman, who averaged 20.5 yards per catch and scored 32 TDs in his high school career. RB Kevin Shorter (6-0, 188) is a threat as a rusher, receiver or kick returner and JC transfer Blake Whiteley could be a plug-in starter at tight end. But the class includes only three OL.

Defense: A pair of signing-day additions at DT from other states (Poona Ford, Chris Nelson) enhanced a need position and helped Texas absorb the hit from three DTs who switched to other schools after first-year coach Charlie Strong replaced predecessor Mack Brown in January. Texas landed a proven playmaker in safety Edwin Freeman (7.5 sacks, 12 TFLs last season at Arlington Bowie) as well as other ball hawks for the secondary. The pass rush should benefit from Derick Roberson, a three-time all-state player and the 2013 Class 4A Defensive Player of the Year.

Immediate Impact: DE Derick Roberson. The departure of Jackson Jeffcoat, a 2013 consensus All-American who collected 27.5 sacks in four college seasons, creates the need for an impact pass rusher. Roberson, who had 20 sacks and 39 TFLs as a high school senior, has the credentials to fill that void.
