A pickup driver northbound on North Beach Street veered off the road and smashed into a utility pole outside the Northpark YMCA in north Fort Worth Tuesday evening, sending sparks flying and knocking out power to the Y.

The driver’s condition wasn’t immediately available.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. near the Y at 9100 N. Beach St., according to a witness.

“He went up on the curb and hit [the pole] head-on. Then he went vertical, spun around and ended up on his side,” said John Stinnett, 29, of Fort Worth, who was unloading groceries across the street near the intersection of Statesman Lane and North Beach.

The driver didn’t appear to be speeding, Stinnett said.

Stinnett said he ran over to help and called 911. He saw explosive flashes coming from the power lines on both sides of the pole, he said.

“There were already six to 10 people” trying to help the driver, he said.

Police arrived within about 10 minutes.

The wreck caused traffic delays on north- and southbound lanes on North Beach.

Patrons of the Y were escorted from the building and urged to clear the parking lot because of the possibility of downed power lines.
