Mavericks rookie Larkin benefits from game with Legends

Shane Larkin must feel like he’s been on a yo-yo the past three days.

The rookie point guard from Miami played five minutes for the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night against Sacramento and the only stat Larkin recorded was the 3-point field goal he missed. The rest of Larkin’s stat line against the Kings consisted of zeroes.

After the game the Mavs said they were sending Larkin to the D-League to play for the Texas Legends.

In Saturday night’s game in Frisco against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Larkin had nine points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals and was 4 of 10 from the field in 33 minutes.

With that solid performance, Larkin was recalled by the Mavs on Sunday and was back at the team’s practice at American Airlines Center.

“He needs work,” coach Rick Carlisle said.

“We just need Shane and Ricky [Ledo] and all our young guys to always have an edge and always be as competitive as possible. And when they go down there [to the D-League] they’re going to see guys that are even more competitive than NBA guys in many cases because they’re really hungry to get to the NBA.”

In Larkin’s case he was back in the NBA quickly, although he didn’t know at the time that he was only going to have a one-game stint with the Legends.

“It’s been a crazy 24 hours, but it is what it is,” Larkin said after the game against Rio Grande Valley. “I didn’t shoot it as well, but I’m just trying to get my rhythm back.”

Larkin was the first Legends player off the bench Saturday, entering the game with 7:08 remaining in the first quarter and his team down 20-7. Less than three minutes later with Larkin running the offense and providing the spark, the Legends and Vipers were tied at 22-22.

Meanwhile, Carlisle likes the idea that the offices of the Mavs and Legends are about 30 minutes apart because it gives him options that are not available to all NBA teams.

“It’s one of the conveniences of having a team so close,” Carlisle said. “And we’ve got great coaching there and they’re doing stuff that we’re doing, so it’s a good situation.”

Marion questionable

Mavs forward Shawn Marion said his status for Monday night’s game against Cleveland was “iffy.”

Marion missed Friday’s game against Sacramento because of soreness stemming from a fall in the Jan. 7 game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

A second MRI revealed what the first one revealed — that Marion has inflammation and contusions on his right shoulder and upper ribs.

“It wasn’t getting any better,” Marion said Sunday. “Every time I got contact or hit or bumped real hard I felt the contact and [the pain] was there and it was hurting.

“I just fought through it the best way I could.”

Marion sat out four games after the initial injury, and then played eight games before missing the game against the Kings. The Mavs still have him listed as day-to-day.
