After a tough, two-point loss Wednesday to out-of-contention Fort Worth Western Hills, Fort Worth Arlington Heights needed a win to stay in the race for a District 7-4A playoff spot with less than two weeks left in the regular season.

Heights fell behind early, but dominated in the second half to pull away from Fort Worth Southwest 61-48 in a boys basketball game Friday at Billingsley Field House.

“Our guys just decided to play for four quarters and we played very intense,” said Arlington Heights coach Jon Wagner, whose team lost to Southwest 56-54 in the teams’ first meeting. “We got after them on the defensive end and that’s what we’ve been working on the last few weeks and it paid off tonight.”

Arlington Heights (13-11, 6-5 7-4A) opened a 7-3 lead and led 16-15 at the end of the first quarter, but Southwest (10-12, 6-5) went on an 11-0 run in the second quarter to build a 26-16 lead.

Quentel Brown had seven of his 10 points during the spree that saw Heights go scoreless in the second quarter until Derrick Lightner hit a pair of free throws with 2:58 left before the half.

From that point Lavelle Scottie, who had 18 points, went on a personal 5-0 run to help pull the Yellow Jackets back to within 27-25 at the half.

A 3-pointer by Fred Norman, who led Southwest with 15 points, gave the Raiders a 32-31 lead early in the third quarter, but then Jaylen Austin and Larry Johnson took over for Heights.

Johnson had 18 points for the Yellow Jackets, and he and Austin scored six points each during a 14-0 run that gave Arlington Heights a 45-32 lead with 7:24 left in the game.

“It was very important because our guys knew we had to have this win because they were above us,” said Wagner. “We’re just trying to attack them one at a time.”
