About the Kings: Sacramento has lost seven of its past eight games. Following Wednesday’s 99-89 home loss to Memphis, Kings coach Michael Malone said: “I told our team afterward that I am going to start playing guys who are willing to defend.” ... The Kings are 28th in the league in points allowed (104.7 ppg). ... Sacramento has played its last four games without DeMarcus Cousins, the team’s leader in scoring (22.6 ppg) and rebounding (11.6 rpg) who has a sprained left ankle. Cousins could return Friday.

About the Mavericks: They are 1-1 on this four-game homestand. ... Coach Rick Carlisle said he “was starting to get the chills” from all the “blow-bys” the Houston Rockets put on the Mavs during Wednesday’s 117-115 loss. ... Dirk Nowitzki is fresh off his best game of the season when he tallied 38 points and snatched a season-high 17 rebounds against the Rockets.
