TCU post Karviar Shepherd will most likely miss the Horned Frogs’ game at Texas Tech on Saturday but could be back by next week, coach Trent Johnson said.

The freshman had two pins inserted in his left pinky finger Tuesday morning after injuring his hand Saturday against Kansas.

Johnson said Shepherd might be practicing this weekend. The Frogs host No. 25 Texas on Tuesday.

“It’s unfortunate for him and the team because he was starting to play well,” Johnson said.

Shepherd started the first 19 games and is averaging 8.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.1 blocks a game.

Amric Fields will replace Shepherd at the post and Jarvis Ray and Hudson Price will move from guards to forwards, Johnson said. TCU (9-10, 0-7 Big 12) has seven scholarship players available at the moment. Forward Devonta Abron and post Aaron Durley are out for the season after preseason injuries. Guard Charles Hill Jr. is academically ineligible and forward Chris Washburn and guard Trey Zeigler can’t play this season because of NCAA transfer rules.

Shepherd is the centerpiece of the Frogs’ talented crop of newcomers and had put together his best string of basketball with three solid performances before Kansas on Saturday. Shepherd got into early foul trouble and injured his hand diving for a loose ball in the first half.

“He showed a great sense of competitiveness and great sense of pride,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he’s never had to deal with so many consecutive injury and roster issues in his 15 seasons as a head coach.

“This is new territory for me,” he said. “The bottom line is, you’re still wearing a TCU basketball uniform, you’re competing in the premiere basketball conference this year, and you’re getting one of the best educations in college right now.”

His main concern is to make sure players such as Kyan Anderson, who has started the last two seasons playing “without all of his bullets,” remains positive.

“I do worry because this is the second go-around for Kyan in a situation like this,” Johnson said. “That’s a toll. We’ll try to slow the game down. We’ll try to execute to the best of our ability … and try to make sure everybody stays confident and enjoys this. It’s hard because it’s important to these guys and they care, but they haven’t shown signs of being down.”

“Hopefully, we’ll get Karviar [Shepherd] back sooner than later. Hopefully, everybody else will remain healthy and if everybody else remains healthy, we’ll have a chance to improve. We really do.” — TCU coach Trent Johnson
