On Jan. 21, the Weatherford Christian School Lions and Lady Lions hosted district opponent Azle Christian School .

The Lady Lions fought hard but came up short, losing 30-23.

Sophomore Keighley Parsons led the team with 12 points and 2 steals. Sophomore Hannah Burks added 9 rebounds.

“We had no energy on defense tonight,” said Coach Debby Steensma. “Our plays on offense were working, but we could not make our shots.”

The Lions struggled to get anything going offensively or defensively as they were beat, 64-29.

Senior Patrick Binzer finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds, 3 steals and 1 block.

“We were beat on defense,” said Coach Jim Steensma. “We gave Azle too many extra chances on offense and we did not stop their penetration along the baseline. As a team, we just have to move forward and continue to improve.”

Later in the week, on Friday, WCS honored Binzer and senior Ashleigh Garvin on Senior Night.

The Lady Lions gave a strong performance against Stonegate Christian Academy as they won, 51-16.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Fell led the team with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 blocks. Sophomore Judy Pope added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Garvin was solid with 5 points, 6 steals, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks.

“The girls were very relaxed tonight and it was a good win,” said Debby Steensma. “Ashleigh has been a good leader for the girls by keeping them focused and looking at the big picture.”

The Lions took on Cornerstone without their leading scorer, Binzer, due to an injury. WCS went on to lose, 54-16.

“I know the score does not reflect it, but there were some positives,” said Jim Steensma. “I was happier with the boys’ performance because they ran what we worked on in practice. Our guards, Austin Wheeling and Cooper Bomar, began to dictate the flow on offense. Our forwards - Chandler Hill, Abraham Hernandez and Ian Martin - all worked hard for rebounds.”

WCS will play again on Friday as they travel to Mineral Wells to face district opponent Community Christian School . The Lady Lions (4-10, 1-2) will play at 6 p.m. and the Lions (3-9, 1-4) play at 7:30 p.m.
