For the second time this season, the Birdville girls survived a furious fourth-quarter rally from Saginaw, escaping with a 56-49 win Friday night.

Birdville (19-7, 11-2 District 6-4A) built a 41-24 lead through the first three quarters only to see Saginaw (17-8, 9-4) roar back with 25 points in the final eight minutes to give the Hawks a fright.

The Roughriders closed within five points twice in the final 1:15 before Birdville iced it, coming up with a key rebound, fastbreak basket and clutch free throws by junior Gabby Nelson in the final seconds.

The Lady Hawks, who strengthened their hopes for at least a second seed playoff berth, played almost an identical game against Saginaw a month ago. In a 48-42 win earlier this season, Birdville saw the Roughriders score 18 fourth-quarter points to almost erase another early lead.

“I think the girls may have started freaking out a little when Saginaw finally started scoring,” Birdville coach Amy Ingram said. “But we kept it together at the end and that’s a tribute to the girls.”

Trailing by 17 points after three quarters, the Roughriders’ Kiley Laminack led the rally, hitting three fourth-quarter 3-pointers to pull Saginaw back into the game.

Nelson led Birdville with 23 points and Halee Brady scored 12.

Laminack led Saginaw with 13.

“Last year, our girls were just glad to make the playoffs [as a fourth seed] and got bounced out of the playoffs in the first round,” Ingram said.

“This year, we dedicated ourselves to finishing in the top two so we could host a first-round game.”
