No. 8 Kansas brings different kind of streak to TCU

When TCU pulled its Miracle at Daniel-Meyer a year ago against then-fifth-ranked Kansas, it came in the middle of a three-game losing streak for the Jayhawks.

Kansas brings a more familiar-looking streak to Fort Worth when TCU hosts the Jayhawks at 8 p.m. Saturday at sold-out Daniel-Meyer Coliseum.

KU (14-4, 5-0 Big 12) has won five consecutive games, including four in a row against ranked opponents. It’s the first time a team has done that since North Carolina during the 1996-97 season. The Jayhawks dispatched No. 24 Baylor by 10 points Monday in Lawrence, Kan.

The Horned Frogs (9-9, 0-6) are still looking for their first league victory. A year ago, TCU started 0-8 before KU visited Feb. 6, fresh off a home loss to Oklahoma State four days earlier. After the Frogs’ 62-55 win, arguably college basketball’s biggest upset in a decade, the Jayhawks’ misery continued with a loss at Oklahoma.

They rebounded, however, to win their next seven games before losing the regular-season finale at Baylor, an 81-58 blowout. KU coach Bill Self, whose team went 31-6 last season, reflected on the TCU loss this week.

“They beat us,” Self told the Kansas City Star. “We had two teams whip us last year: TCU and Baylor. Everybody else was a one-possession game. They handled us, so there was nothing taken away from them.”

KU won the Big 12 tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 before losing to Michigan in overtime at Cowboys Stadium.

Only two Jayhawks — Perry Ellis and Naadir Tharpe — remain prominent members of the team TCU shocked a year ago. Talented freshmen Andrew Wiggins, Joel Embiid and Frank Mason have KU playing some of the best basketball in the country at the moment. The 7-foot post Embiid is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 rebounds a game. Self told The Star that had TCU’s Karviar Shepherd accepted KU’s scholarship offer, Embiid may have not been a Jayhawk.

“It’s weird how things work out,” Self said. “We offered Karviar a scholarship, and we only had one to give, and if he’d have taken it, then we would have been out on [Joel]. But he committed to TCU, and Karviar Shepard is going to be a good player. There’s no question he’s going to be a good player, and he’s getting better all the time.”

Shepherd has scored in double figures the last three games and had a 11 rebounds in TCU’s 77-69 loss at No. 25 Oklahoma on Wednesday. TCU coach Trent Johnson called it Shepherd’s best game in league play.
