It was another first half to forget for the UT Arlington women’s basketball team Wednesday at College Park Center. After managing just six field goals and committing 11 turnovers in the game’s first 20 minutes, the Mavericks fell 85-62 to Troy.

For the game, the Mavericks hit 20 field goals while turning the ball over 21 times and forcing just nine Troy turnovers.

What made the stagnant first half even more surprising was the way UTA opened the game. The Mavericks scored the first seven points on baskets inside from Desherra Nwanguma and Briana Walker before point guard Laila Suleiman knocked in a 3-pointer with 18:30 left in the first.

Five minutes later, UTA (1-16, 0-6 Sun Belt) built a 13-6 lead after Malaika Green’s open 3-pointer from the corner, but the Mavericks hit just two more field goals the rest of the first half. Green hit another 3-pointer from the same spot on the court with 25 seconds left in the opening half to bring the Mavs to within 41-27, and UTA went into halftime down 46-29.

Green finished with 10 points while Nwanguma scored 16 of her team-high 20 points in the second half and grabbed 15 rebounds.

Joanna Harden, fourth in the nation in scoring, led Troy (6-12, 2-5) with a game-high 32 points.
