The Weatherford College womens basketball team beat Cisco College 75-62 Jan. 15, improving to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The win was WC’s tenth in a row in North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play going back to last year, when the Lady Coyotes finished the regular season with eight conference wins in a row and their second straight league title.

Returning All-American Itiana Taylor had a big night in Cisco, scoring 24 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and adding 6 assists.

The Lady Coyotes began their conference title defense with a win Jan. 11, an 86-65 victory over Hill College in the NTJCAC opener at the Betty Jo Crumm Graber Athletic Center.

Ciara Johnson led WC with 19 points. Returning All-American Itiana Taylor scored 17 points.

The Lady Coyotes (7-2 overall, 1-0 NTJCAC) have won the last two North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference championships.

The WC men’s team lost to Hill, 85-73. Freshman forward Tonko Vuko led the Coyotes (7-9 overall, 0-1 NTJCAC) with 18 points.

Former Lady Coyote hits buzzer-beater for Longhorns

Former Weatherford College basketball player GiGi Mazionyte hit a last-minute three-pointer to force overtime in the Texas Longhorns’ 79-74 win over No. 22 Oklahoma Jan. 11.

Mazionyte, a senior for UT, hit the shot with 36 seconds remaining in regulation to force the Longhorns’ first overtime game of the season. Mazionyte finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half.

“GiGi Mazionyte was terrific and a huge lift for us,” said Karen Aston, UT’s head coach. “The way we won today was fun as a coach. You enjoy a game like that when your team really dug deep, and I want to build on this.”

More than 6,000 people saw the game at the Frank Erwin Center, including several thousand elementary school kids in the third annual “40 Acres Field Trip.”

Texas is 11-4 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12.

Mazionyte was a two-time first team All-Conference selection for the Lady Coyotes. The Lithuania native averaged 15.3 points and 7.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2011-12 and was the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2010-11.
