All Sammy Silver wanted was another shot.

The Southlake Carroll guard had a chance to beat Richland last year, but misfired. He got that chance again Tuesday night at the end of regulation, and, again, his jumper was off. But when overtime came, and Carroll needed a basket to stay alive with 5.1 seconds left, Silver’s fortunes turned in his favor.

The senior knocked down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from several feet behind the arc to give Carroll an 86-85 win over Richland on Richland’s home court. The win kept Carroll (10-7, 4-4) alive for the fourth playoff spot in District 4-5A.

“After I missed the one in regulation, I was just hoping I’d get another chance at it,” Silver said. “I thought it was money right when I released it, and when it went down, it was just unreal.”

Silver’s game-winner capped an up-and-down 37 minutes that saw Carroll’s double-digit lead shrink late, the momentum shift squarely in favor of Richland (14-8, 5-3), and, finally, the Dragons’ bench clearing onto the court.

“For us to come in here and pull off a win on their court — you know it’s going to be tough — it just shows how gritty our kids are,” Carroll coach Eric McDade said. “It was really cool. They never stopped fighting.”

Tim Priller, who led Richland with 39 points, hit two 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds of the fourth quarter, both tying the game at the time. Hayden Hunter, who finished with 20, hit a trey with around two minutes left in regulation that cut Carroll’s lead to 75-72.
