The Hurst L.D. Bell boys pulled away from Grapevine for a 59-44 home win Tuesday night, giving the Raiders a sweep of the Mustangs this season.

Bell (13-10, 5-3 District 6-5A) jumped out early and led 14-2 heading into the second quarter. Grapevine’s Bryce Batchelor ended the Mustangs’ dry spell of more than six minutes without a basket and his three-point play late in the first half cut the Raiders’ lead to 24-16 at halftime.

Grapevine (13-10, 3-5) continued to chip away at Bell’s lead in the third quarter when Adam Sandy and Daniel Eibel hit consecutive 3-pointers to fuel an 8-2 run that got the Mustangs to within 26-24. That, however, was as close as they would get.

Senior guard Akeem Black helped Bell maintain its advantage with seven of his game-high 15 points in the period. Bell took a 35-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

“Grapevine is scrappy, they really are,” Bell coach Willie Henderson said. “The score is not indicative at all of the game.”

The Raiders extended their lead when Malik Ingram’s three-point play and a basket by Mo Uasike made it 44-33 Bell midway through the fourth quarter.

A pair of Josh Bushman free throws with just under 2 minutes left gave the Raiders an insurmountable 50-35 lead.

“I’ve got some seniors that have been in the grind,” Henderson added. “I think their composure down the stretch was the key. That’s what seniors are supposed to do.”

Ingram had 14 points for the Raiders with Bushman adding 12 and Christian Davis 10.

The trio of Gabe Ford, Sandy and Batchelor led the Mustangs with eight each.
