Gretchen Morrison couldn’t seem to miss.

The Southlake Carroll senior forward at one point Tuesday night swished a 3-pointer from a few feet behind the arc, only to follow that on the next possession with another three off the glass. And that was only a quarter of the damage she inflicted from 3-point range.

In all, Morrison hit 8 of her 10 3-point attempts, finishing with 34 points and leading the Dragons to a 67-41 win over Richland at Richland High School.

Morrison’s big night was not only the biggest of her career, but also a school record, and it helped the Dragons overcome an early 9-8 deficit with 3:11 left in the first quarter.

Morrison’s first 3-pointer put Carroll (23-4, 10-0 District 4-5A) back in front, and she followed that with a basket and two more 3-pointers, giving the Dragons a 21-11 lead by the end of the first period.

“[Morrison’s first-quarter run] was huge. I love threes for twos,” Carroll coach Teri Morrison said. “It’s always fun to see a kid with a hot hand, and she had it.”

“I was feeling it, but I was also getting great help from my teammates,” Morrison said. “The reason good shooters shoot well is because of their teammates.”

Richland (14-10, 6-4) cut the lead to 10 early in the third quarter, but Carroll kept Richland at a distance behind the play of Morrison, who hit her sixth 3-pointer just before the end of the quarter, putting the Dragons ahead 53-35.

Kennedy Leonard was Carroll’s second-leading scorer with nine points, and nine Dragons put points on the board.

Maddie Holcomb led Richland with 12 points. Sydney Brock added 11.
