One of TCU’s two Big 12 wins a year ago came at home against Oklahoma in the regular-season finale. It was one of the Horned Frogs’ better shooting nights of the season as they shot 54 percent from the field, including 57 percent from 3-point range.

It was the last of the five games TCU shot 50 percent or better from the field last season (of which the Frogs won four times). In 15 of their first 16 Big 12 games last season, TCU shot below 40 percent (including its upset against then-No. 5 Kansas).

TCU’s shooting was expected to be improved this season, but through much of the first five league games the team’s inability to score consistently has strained other parts, including defense, rebounding and substitutions. TCU is following consecutive games of below-30 percent shooting entering its 8 p.m. Wednesday contest at No. 25 Oklahoma (14-4, 3-2), which is 8-2 at Lloyd Noble Center this season.

The Frogs (9-8, 0-5) are coming off their worst shooting game in at least 14 years. Shooting statistics beyond that aren’t readily available. Since the 2004-05 season, TCU has shot below 30 percent 12 times. Five of those, have come the last two seasons, including 29.1 percent against Oklahoma State and 20.4 percent against Texas Tech, both coming last week. TCU is last in the league in scoring offense (65.9 points per game) and in field goal percentage (41.2).

“Guys need to get in on their own in their spare time and shoot the ball more,” TCU coach Trent Johnson said after the Frogs’ started 1-for-19 against Tech Saturday. “[They need to practice] game speed, game shots. Shoot shots within the framework of the offense.”

Uncharted territory

TCU’s offense has struggled this season, especially in Big 12 play. The Horned Frogs have shot below 30 percent in consecutive games for the first time in at least 14 seasons. Here’s a look at the low-water marks the past 10 seasons:
