Trophy Club Nelson had a size advantage in Friday’s District 5-4A showdown with Denton, and the Bobcats took advantage of it with 6-foot-7 senior Emmanuel Nzekwesi.

Nzekwesi scored a game-high 29 points to lead the Bobcats to a 68-50 victory that left Nelson (17-5, 6-1 5-4A) tied with Denton Guyer (12-8, 6-1) atop the District 5-4A standings. Denton (8-9, 5-2 in 5-4A) fell one game back.

“We tried to get him the ball and he had a great night,” Nelson coach Scott Curran said of Nzekwesi. “He’s been great all year and a hard worker and takes pride. And he brought it tonight.”

Nelson, which relies on solid defense, held the Broncos to 14 of 51 shooting. Take away a 6 of 11 effort in the third quarter and Denton made only 8 of 40 shots. Denton’s leading scorer, Adarian Harris, was held to 12 points, six in the third quarter when the Broncos made a couple of runs to cut the lead to five twice.

“Denton is a great team and you can’t let them get into transition,” Curran said. “I thought we did a good job of that tonight, and we limited their opportunities. For us to be successful we have to play good defense.”

The Bobcats used a 3-pointer by Ethan Davis to start the game and never trailed. They jumped to a 14-4 lead in the first period behind seven points from Thomas Williams. They started the second quarter on a 6-1 run, with Williams scoring three points and Davis hitting his second 3-pointer to open a 20-9 lead.

Denton, which trailed 30-20 at halftime, went on a 5-0 run to start the third and cut the lead to five again at 32-27. Nelson responded with a 10-4 run, with Nzekwesi accounting for all off Nelson’s points.
