The Hurst L.D. Girls basketball team delivered head coach Brock Pembleton his 100th victory at the school with a convincing 67-39 victory over Colleyville Heritage at the Heritage Gym.

The Panthers (18-12, 6-3 District 6-5A) came into the game with a chance of pulling into a tie with Bell, but the win keeps the Raiders (20-2, 8-1 District 6-5A) alone on top of the district.

Bell point guard Cierra Johnson found room in the Panther defense for several early layups that gave the Raiders a quick 11-2 lead halfway through the first quarter. She finished with a season-high 29 points.

“It was a great win against a good team,” Pembleton said. “We expected it to be a lot closer, but everything was clicking for us on offense and defense. It was a good game all the way around.”

Johnson along with the other Bell guards spent the night driving into the Panther defense and picking up easy points in the paint despite the presence of Panthers 6-foot-3 junior post Artavia Ford.

“She is a real presence in the middle and she gets her share of shot blocks,” Pembleton said of Ford. “You just have to be aware of her and get ball movement and that was something we were able to do tonight.”

Colleyville Heritage, led by Victoria Bratcher’s 12 points, had trouble slowing down the Raiders as a 20-10 first-quarter Bell lead stretched to 36-15 by halftime.

Ford collected 11 points, but was bothered by double team defense most of that night that seemed to throw her timing off on her inside shooting, especially in the second half. Ford only scored once from the field after halftime.
