Texas Tech quarterback Michael Brewer, a third-year sophomore who redshirted during the 2011 season, announced Wednesday that he will transfer from the school after completing his degree in May.

By completing his degree in university studies, Brewer would be eligible to transfer to another school with immediate eligibility for the 2014 season, under NCAA rules. But Big 12 rules prevent him from transferring within the conference, school officials said.

One of three quarterbacks who saw action for the Red Raiders during the 2013 season, Brewer is the second to leave the school since freshman Davis Webb led the Red Raiders to a 37-23 victory over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. Freshman Baker Mayfield, a walk-on, did not return to Tech for the spring semester and announced plans to transfer to Oklahoma.

Brewer, a graduate of Austin Lake Travis who led the team to state championships in 2009 and 2010 as the starting quarterback, did not indicate where he intends to continue his college career but made it clear that he plans to do so. His father, Robert, was a quarterback at Texas who led the Longhorns to a 10-1-1 record in the 1981 season, capped by a 14-12 victory over Alabama in the Cotton Bowl.

In a statement issued by school officials, Brewer said: “I am honored to receive my degree from Texas Tech and will always call this university home. … Wherever I may go, I hope our fans will respect the person and player that I am. The decision to transfer was well thought out by my family and myself and was one of the toughest of my life. I feel it’s the right decision for me going forward.”

In two seasons at Tech, Brewer played in 13 games. He threw for 440 yards and five touchdowns in backup duty. In high school, Brewer threw for 7,302 yards and rushed for 1,336 yards as a starter for then-Lake Travis coach Chad Morris, now the Clemson offensive coordinator.
