Azle got close Tuesday night against Trophy Club Nelson, but never close enough.

The Bobcats staved off a Hornets rally, winning 37-29 in a District 5-4A game at Azle High School.

Nelson (19-5, 6-2) led Azle 28-4 at one point in the first half before a third-quarter drought allowed the Hornets to creep back into the game and head into the fourth quarter down 31-20. Azle (13-8, 5-3) would get within six points with less than a minute left, but its shots from that point wouldn’t fall.

The victory pushed Nelson past Azle in the district standings. The Bobcats beat the Hornets 47-43 on Dec. 11.

Nelson dominated early. The Bobcats went on a 23-0 run that began three minutes into the game and ended with about two minutes remaining before halftime.

Nelson led 13-4 after one quarter.

But Azle would prevent a brewing blowout behind the play of Valerie Matlock.

The junior guard led the Hornets with eight points, the biggest coming on a pair of 3-pointers late in the second quarter. The Hornets were trailing by 24 points when Matlock knocked down her first 3-pointer, Azle’s first basket since early in the first quarter. She then banked in another shot from beyond the arc, which was followed by a basket by Taylor Fulfer to end the quarter. Nelson took a 28-12 lead into halftime.

Azle held Nelson to three points in the third quarter.

Madison Edwards led Nelson with eight points. Tralyn Woodard and Sydney Smallwood added six points each.
