The Aledo boys basketball team is off to one if its best district starts in head coach Steve Smith’s tenure.

After knocking off Granbury 43-39 on Jan. 7 and losing a tough one to Fort Worth Trimble Tech, 48-46 on Friday, for the District 7-4A lead, the Bearcats sit at 4-1 in district play and 10-10 overall. The split last week puts them in solid position to make the post season after a one-year absence.

“What we’ve got is a team of 13 guys that are all about the team and have bought into the idea of we don’t care who scores as long as Aledo scores,” Smith said. “I know deep down every kid wants to play and get more playing time but this group isn’t selfish. We move the ball a lot better than we have in the past and have multiple threats that aren’t afraid to step up and make the big shots. We have about eight players who can make a shot when we need it. I’m not saying any of our guys are all world, but collectively they are special.”

Leading the way is Carl Williams who averages 16.8 points and 8 rebounds per game. Matt Dunn, who along with Williams is a senior, contributes 10 points per contest. It doesn’t end there as Dawson Gates and Braxton McCoy can also score when needed. The team also added two football players Luke Bishop and Alex Stockdale to the roster.

“We’ve only played five games with the whole team now so were going to get better,” Smith said. “We are just now starting to scratch the surface and the advantage of football playing deep is that while most teams might peak early we’re just now starting to get there.”

Smith attributes the team’s tough non-district schedule and a trip to Sour Lake as part of the reason for his team’s success.

“Because of the teams we have played we have gotten ready for this district,” Smith said. “We work six days a week as hard as anyone else. You have to work to produce the same effort on Tuesday and Friday that you do in practice. Aledo loves and winner and once you start winning they will come no matter what the sport is. Hopefully boys’ basketball is now.”
