Granbury overcame an early fourth-quarter deficit against Fort Worth Arlington Heights and shut down the Yellow Jackets’ offense in the final frame to claim a 51-41 District 7-4A victory on Saturday at Billingsley Field House.

Brennan Bibbs’ two free throws 25 seconds into the fourth quarter put Arlington Heights up 37-32 over the Pirates. From then on, Granbury took over, limiting the Yellow Jackets to just four points the rest of the way.

Leading Granbury’s charge were Jacob Taylor and Mitchell May. Taylor hit a 3 to tie the game with 6:16 to play and then hit another with 4:55 left to give his team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Taylor ended the game with 12 points, and May finished with 11 for Granbury (7-12, 2-3). Clay Brawner had a team-high 13, including five in the fourth quarter, all from the free-throw line.

“All year, we have been so close and come up short, and we just kept saying, ‘Not today, not today,’ ” Granbury coach David Breazeale said. “Jacob hit two big 3s to get us back into the game and the lead, and Mitchell hit some big shots inside there. This is a huge win that keeps us breathing as we knew we had to get a win on the road at some point.”

Heights (10-7, 3-2) played its second straight game without Tyler Kelly, who is listed as day to day with an injury. Andre Washington led the Yellow Jackets with 11. Washington only scored four points in the second half, and those were the first points of the third quarter.

Granbury switched to a press in the fourth quarter and forced Heights to turn the ball over five times and go 0 for 8 from the floor.

“We’re so outsized on the inside most of the time, but they gutted it out and kept fighting and working,” Breazeale said. “We were down seven, so we decided to go ahead and switch and put the press on. And we forced some mistakes.”
