A rain of 3-pointers by Kasey Shepherd and Kevin Brown pulled Louisiana-Lafayette out of an early deficit as the Ragin’ Cajuns stormed past UT Arlington 90-70 on Saturday.

The visiting Mavericks went from leading 8-7 to trailing 21-8 in the four-minute turnaround.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (10-5, 1-1 Sun Belt) sank 9 of 22 3-point baskets and also scored 31 points from the free-throw line, scoring in bunches to build leads of as many as 18 points by halftime and by 27 in the second half.

Shawn Long led Louisiana-Lafayette with 22 points and seven blocks, Shepherd scored 17 on 3-for-4 3-point shooting, and Elfrid Payton and Xavian Rimmer added 12 apiece.

Lonnie McClanahan led UTA (6-10, 1-3) with 27 points, Brandon Edwards 10. The Mavericks were held to 39 percent shooting (24 of 61) and hit just 5 of 20 3-point tries.

Bench strength was a factor as Louisiana-Lafayette reserves outscored their Mavericks counterparts 49-15.

UTA did get off to a good start with freshman forward Brandon Williams blocking Lafayette’s first shot, leading to a fastbreak dunk from senior forward Brandon Edwards.

Turnovers would become an issue for UTA in the first half, with the Mavericks giving up the ball 11 times.

Sophomore guard Luke Davis provided a spark off the bench with nine points in the half on three 3-pointers in his first significant playing time this season. The walk-on hadn’t scored in any of his four previous outings.

Williams had eight points and seven rebounds at halftime, but the Mavericks struggled from the floor.

UTA went into the locker room shooting 36.4 percent (12 of 33) and down 45-27.

“It was a disappointing game,” UTA coach Scott Cross said. “We got in a big deficit early on and it was hard to fight back from it.”
