Arlington Martin forward Patrick Burke said he knew midseason would be a turning point for the Warriors.

He and football standout Myles Garrett proved why Friday night as they combined to score 18 points in leading Martin to a 57-42 District 3-5A win over rival Arlington Lamar at Martin’s gym.

Burke and Garrett had four thundering dunks to get the crowd on its feet.

“Everyone knows we have great guard play, but bringing Myles in from football was going to give us a shot at being more balanced offensively,” Burke said. “It was a lot of fun, but I think Myles might have had the better dunks tonight.”

Although Garrett disagreed on who showcased the dunk best, both he and Burke presented a serious challenge for the Vikings’ inside game.

Martin (11-6, 5-0 District 3-5A) led 37-22 going to the final quarter and stretched that lead to as much as 20 points with 3:31 to go.

Lamar (10-8, 3-2) struggled from the perimeter most of the night as usual high-scoring guard Julius Jackson had only six points through the third quarter before scoring nine points in the last quarter.

Brandon Chiles also had 10 for the Vikings.

“With the size we have I feel like we bring some pretty strong defense to the floor,” Garrett said. “And if you catch a team shooting poorly, I think it makes things harder on them if they can’t play inside.”

Martin guard Nick Babb had 15 points to lead the Warriors, and Burke finished with 10.

Burke had six points during a 9-2 run in the second quarter, including a dunk and an easy layup, to keep the cushion.
