Dallas Mavericks small forward Shawn Marion missed Wednesday’s game and will be out at least one more game with a bruised right shoulder and bruised upper ribs.

The 15-year veteran will miss Friday’s game in New Orleans against the Pelicans but could return for Saturday’s home game against New Orleans.

Marion injured himself with 1:34 remaining in the first half Tuesday against the Los Angeles Lakers when he accidentally tripped over teammate Dirk Nowitzki.

“I don’t know what his status is going to be for Saturday, but he’s banged up; he’s in an uncomfortable state right now,” coach Rick Carlisle said. “He’s hurting, but to my knowledge there was no serious things from the diagnostic test.”

The Mavs started Wayne Ellington against the Spurs in Marion’s place. But that all could change, especially because Marion also is one of the primary backups to Nowitzki at power forward.

“There are a lot of different ways that we can go with his minutes,” Carlisle said. “Both in the starting minutesand then the backup [power forward] minutes. Those are the ones that are maybe the diciest because we’ve gotten into a groove with that group; we’ve done better and better with it.

“So now we may be looking at a bigger guy there, we may be looking at a smaller guy there. We’ll have to see.”

Jae Crowder has some defensive tendencies similar to Marion, the Mavs’ best defender. But he’s not as crafty as Marion.

“He’s very unique,” Carlisle said of Marion. “Crowder’s game is different. They’re both active guys. Beyond that, their games are quite different.”

Pop on Rodman’s trip

Add Spurs coach Gregg Popovich to the growing list of NBA personnel who believe Dennis Rodman had no business planning a basketball game in North Korea to help celebrate the birthday of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

“[NBA Commissioner] David Stern made a great statement,” Popovich said prior to Wednesday’s game. “In no way does that trip or the individuals represent the league in any way, shape or form.

“There’s nothing else much to be said than that.”

Carlisle refused to comment on the trip.

Mavs in Bynum chase

According to ESPN, the Mavs are one of eight teams that have contacted representatives of Andrew Bynum and are in the hunt to sign the 7-foot center who will become a free agent Thursday.

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Bynum to the Chicago Bulls on Monday. In a cost-cutting move, the Bulls swiftly waived Bynum on Tuesday.

The Mavs met with Bynum over the summer when he was a free agent, but decided against making him a contract offer.
