A second-quarter lull on offense was no problem for the Aledo girls basketball team Tuesday night as its defense limited Granbury and helped the Bearcats down the Pirates for a 53-27 win at Aledo’s gymnasium.

Aledo, ranked No. 2 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class 4A state poll, stayed undefeated in District 7-4A play with the victory.

The Bearcats (17-3, 6-0 in 7-4A) led from start to finish, getting out to a 20-6 edge after the first quarter. At that point, Aledo hit a wall offensively as Granbury (9-8, 4-2) held the Bearcats to eight points in the second quarter.

But on the other side of the ball, Aledo’s full-court press continued to suffocate Granbury’s offense, holding the Pirates to just six more points before the half.

“We take pride in our defense, and [Aledo players] have worked their tails off to get where they’re at,” Aledo coach Mike Pinkerton said. “We had a let-up on both sides of the ball in the second quarter. We can’t go out there and take the breaks like that.”

Aledo’s offense quickly reignited after taking a 28-12 lead into the third quarter.

Megan Wood scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the second half as the Bearcats saw their halftime lead nearly double by the end of the third quarter.

Earlier in the contest, Aledo controlled the post game behind the play of Justis Szczepanski-Beavers, a 6-foot-4 junior who scored nine points in the opening quarter and finished with 14 on the night.

Aledo’s Alyssa Dry scored all nine of her points in the third quarter.

Morgan Northcutt led Granbury with eight points.
