Arlington Bowie got a pair of free throws from Brandon Hall with 8.5 seconds remaining in overtime to edge Arlington Lamar 53-51 Tuesday night in a meeting of undefeated teams in District 3-5A.

The visiting Volunteers led by as many as 11 points in the first half, but Lamar clawed back. The Vikings held a seven-point lead with just over three minutes to play.

Bowie’s Jordan Versey hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 47-45. Then, Dante Hales scored on a putback to even the score at 47-all at the end of regulation.

The teams traded points in overtime until Hall stepped to the line.

“I was just thinking, ‘Make these two free throws and win the game,’ ” Hall said. “I felt real confident.”

Hall led the Volunteers with 18 points.

Bowie (15-3, 4-0) opened the game on a 7-1 run and led 14-8 after the first period.

Bowie made another run in the second quarter. Vandy Hopson’s layup gave the Vols a 21-11 lead, but the Vikings (10-7, 3-1) closed the first half with a surge.

First, Brandon Chiles hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 21-14 before a 3-pointer and a layup from Julius Jackson made the score 23-19 at intermission.

Lamar took its first lead midway through the third quarter when Jackson hit a 3-pointer to make the score 29-28. The Vikings pushed that lead to 42-36 with 3:36 left in the game.

“This was a great game for us,” Bowie coach Allen Gratts said. “We needed a game like that. This was the first time we’ve had an opportunity to come back and fight to get a win.”
