It seemed like every time the Arlington Bowie girls needed a big play, Emerald Mayfield was the one to make it happen.

The junior forward scored a game-high 19 points and made several key plays as the Volunteers pulled away late to defeat Arlington Lamar 55-42 in a District 3-5A basketball game Tuesday at Lamar High School.

Mayfield opened the second half by taking a charge to spur a 10-2 run she capped with a layup, assisted by Bria Degrate, that gave Bowie (18-2, 6-0) a 39-29 lead with 3:48 left in the third quarter.

Lamar (16-6, 5-1) battled back behind Dierra Ely and Dezirae Hampton, who had 14 points each for the Vikings, but Mayfield ended a 5-0 run by Lamar with a jumper from the free-throw line and then raised the lead to nine points with a three-point play off an assist from Tamiyjah Smith.

“She was in it from the jump,” Bowie coach Kelly Carruthers said of Mayfield. “We just needed a couple of people to step up with her and we just haven’t been able to find that yet.”

Jazmine Holman chipped in 10 points for Bowie, ranked sixth in Class 5A by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, and was lauded by Carruthers for handling the pressure applied by Ely, Hampton and the rest of the Lamar guards.

A 3-pointer by Jada Washington with 4:26 left pulled the Vikings to within seven points at 47-40, but baskets by Smith and Mayfield put the Volunteers back up by 11.

Ely fouled out with 2:28 left in the game, and the Vikings were only able to score two more points the rest of the way.
