For most of the season White Settlement Brewer has been up and down including their showing at the Moritz Holiday Classic in Aledo during the holiday break. But the Bears (11-7, 3-0 District 5-4A) they have been up at the right times. They enter the season's biggest week as District 5-4A action heats up with games against two teams they expect to compete for playoff spots: Denton (2-1 in 5-4A) and Trophy Club Nelson, who they sit atop the standings with after their upset of Denton Guyer on Friday. This week we will really start to see where we are at, Brewer coach Jason Porostovsky said. Thats not to say that we havent played some tough teams, but playing Denton and Byron we will know where we are at.Brewer made the playoffs as the No. 4 seed last season. This year's team is still young with seven juniors and one freshman on the roster. Porostovsky attributes last seasons run as part of this seasons success. They understand what it takes after last year for us to get to the playoffs, Porostovsky said. Last year we just wanted to get in, but this year we want to get in and make some noise. The experience they gained last year was tremendous it helped up learn what we need to do.Two of those who understand the system are senior Momo Hamza and junior Garrick Reynolds who have both been on varsity since their sophomore season. They know the key to their offense success is the effort they turn in on the defensive end something they hope to do this week. This district is tough and really prepares you for what you will see, said Porostovsky, who built his non-district schedule around the type of teams his district opponents present. Our record might not look that great, but we tried to play some really good teams that play a lot of different styles like we will see the next few weeks.
