Round 1/31: C Travis Frederick (6-3, 312, Wisconsin) Frederick quickly quieted all the controversy surrounding his surprise pick in the first round. He was a walk-in starter and will be a anchor there for years to come. He was ranked seventh among NFL centers by Pro Football Focus. He was ranked as the league’s top run blocker at the position.

Round 2/47: TE Gavin Escobar (6-5, 254, San Diego State) Just from a sheer numbers standpoint, Escobar was a huge disappointment. He caught nine passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Considering what the Cowboys passed up to get him, the production doesn’t compute. He was a liability as a run blocker, causing the Cowboys to forgo plans of using a two-tight end offense.

Round 3/74: WR Terrance Williams (6-2, 210, Baylor) Williams was drafted as insurance for the oft-injured Miles Austin and he was needed almost immediately. Williams was forced into the lineup as a starter three games into the season and never relinquished it. He had some growing pains, but the Cowboys stayed with him and Williams responded with 44 catches for 736 yards and five touchdowns.

Round 3/80: S J.J. Wilcox (6-0, 212, Georgia Southern) The Cowboys knew they had a project on their hands when they drafted Wilcox, who played only one year of safety in college. He moved into the starting lineup three games into the season but was set back by a knee injury. The Cowboys also had issues with his shoddy tackling, causing him to be benched in favor of undrafted free agent Jeff Heath. Wilcox will get first dibs at the position in 2014. His instincts will need to improve.

Round 4/114: CB B.W. Webb (5-10, 184, William and Mary) Webb was supposed to have an immediate impact on special teams and push Orlando Scandrick at nickel cornerback. He was disappointment all around, making few plays on special teams and proving to be a liability on defense. No confidence. No ball skills. No physical edge.

Round 5/151: RB Joseph Randle (6-0, 204, Oklahoma State) The Cowboys drafted Randle with hopes of using him more. But he started behind because of off-season wrist surgery, and the coaches couldn’t trust him in the passing game. He had 54 carries for 164 yards and two touchdowns in limited play. Needs to have a bigger role in 2014

Round 6/185: LB DeVonte Holloman (6-1, 243, South Carolina) Holloman missed almost half the season with a spinal contusion, and when he returned for the final few games he found himself playing in a new position. He was forced into action at middle linebacker for the first time in his life because of injuries, but acquitted himself well with 17 tackles in the final two games. He could push Bruce Carter at weakside linebacker next year. — Clarence E. Hill Jr.
