A pregnant woman who was being stabbed Friday when a Watauga police officer shot her assailant in the head is improving, and her unborn child should be OK. But the man who stabbed her died Friday night, an official said.

“The suspect was declared dead around 10 p.m.,” Watauga police Sgt. Jason Babcock said.

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office had not listed the man’s name Saturday evening.

The pregnant woman appears to be improving at John Peter Smith Hospital, Babcock said.

“Doctors feared she might lose her arm, but they seem to have saved it,” he said.

A second female victim was treated for stab wounds and was released Friday from Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth.

The unidentified officer who responded to the call about 1:20 p.m. in the 6400 block of Patsy Lane has been with the Watauga Police Department about two years.

He is in his 40s and this is his first job as a police officer. He remains on routine administrative leave while Texas Rangers investigate the shooting is investigated. However, preliminary investigation indicates that he acted properly, Babcock said.

“From all appearances he handled himself quite well,” Babcock said. “We’re fortunate that he was so close and his response was so quick.”

The officer was just blocks away when he received the call. He arrived to find one woman on the ground and another being stabbed. He fired one shot from about 10 feet away, hitting the suspect in the head, Babcock said.

“The officer’s actions are still being looked into, but it looks liike it was something he had to do,” Babcock said. “It looks like he may have saved three lives with one shot.”

Police still don’t know why the man attacked the women, but Babcock said the pregnant woman was the man’s girlfriend.

“I don’t know the details of their relationship, but there was some sort of trouble,” Babcock said. “We’re still investigating what led to the attack.”

Both women and the suspect are young adults, and at least one of the women lived in the house on Patsy Lane. One of the women called 911.
