Baylor football coach Art Briles took his name out of the running for the Texas vacancy Friday morning by expressing plans to remain in Waco on his Twitter account and by releasing a statement through school officials.

“I have no desire to pursue other coaching positions,” Briles said in the statement.

Briles, who led the Bears to an 11-2 record and the first Big 12 championship in school history, has been mentioned as a candidate for the Texas job and the Washington Redskins job in recent days. In Washington, Briles would be reunited with quarterback Robert Griffin III, who became Baylor’s lone Heisman Trophy winner while playing for Briles in 2011.

Briles, 58, appeared to slam the door on both opportunities Friday. On his Twitter account, @CoachArtBriles, he posted: “Contrary to reports and rumors I am a Baylor Bear — 2013 Big 12 Champs.” Briles’ post appeared shortly before 10 a.m.

Soon thereafter, he issued a statement through Baylor school officials, expressing that he had no desire to pursue other coaching opportunities.

“As I’ve said many times, I am both humbled and honored to be the head coach at Baylor University, and believe we have something special going here,” Briles said. “I look forward to leading the Bears onto the field next fall and McLane Stadium and defending our Big 12 championship that our players and coaches worked so hard to win this season.

“There is tremendous excitement for our program’s future, and I look forward to many more great seasons at Baylor.”

Briles recently signed a 10-year extension with the school but there had been speculation that Texas officials would be willing to pay the reported $4 million buyout to bring Briles to Austin to coach the Longhorns. Mack Brown resigned as Texas coach last month.
