Keller Public Library receives $30,000 donation for check-out system

Friends of the Keller Public Library presented a $30,000 check at the Dec. 17 City Council meeting to go toward a new book tracking system.

A proposal for the system was approved in an Oct. 15 council meeting.

The system, known as Radio Frequency Identification Technology, or RFID, will make checking in books more efficient. Radio waves will sort and tag books and notify patrons the moment a book is available or not.

It includes a "smart book drop" with five bin sorters, tags, scanners, software license, upgrades to the current self checkout system and a mobile staff station for tagging the collection.

Library Director Jana Prock said use of the system should begin next summer because library workers will be tagging more than 80,000 items.

The library checks out more than 530,000 materials a year, and the new system will make that process quicker and allow for more checkouts, Prock said.

“Not only will it smooth out the checkin and checkout process, but it will allow the staff more time to interact with patrons,” Prock said.

The Keller Public Library is using an inter-local agreement with the city of Fort Worth to purchase the system, which will cost $141,070 including training.

The donation is matched with a $105,820 check through citizen donations and $5,250 from the library budget.

Watauga, Fort Worth, Haltom City and Burleson libraries are also working toward using this new system.
