Fort Worth Dunbar dominated the second half to cruise to an 84-51 victory over Fort Worth Eastern Hills on Tuesday at Billingsley Field House. The Wildcats led by six at halftime but pushed the lead to 13 by the end of the third quarter.
“We just had to go with fundamental basketball, playing position on defense, making layups. We just had to capitalize on their mistakes and we weren’t doing that in the first half,” Dunbar boys basketball coach Robert Hughes Jr. said.
Dennis Jones paced the Wildcats with 20 points. Levin Johnson added 16 and Logan Ray 13.
Noah Scott led the Highlanders with 17 while Daniel William had 10.
Dunbar (10-3, 5-0 District 6-4A) opened the game on an 8-2 run, but a Mike Green 3-pointer brought Eastern Hills (10-9, 3-3) to within 8-7.
Late in the first quarter, Scott hit a 3-pointer to give the Highlanders their first lead at 14-12. The lead was short-lived, as Johnson answered with a 3-pointer to put the Wildcats back in front, 15-14, at the end of the first period.
Dunbar led 27-26 midway through the second before it put together a 6-0 run sparked by Courtney Coulson’s alley-oop dunk. The seven-point lead was the Wildcats’ biggest of the half.
Scott again sliced into the lead, hitting another 3-pointer to bring Eastern Hills back within 35-31. But Johnson answered with one of his own to make it 38-31.
Eastern Hills had seven free-throw attempts over the last minute-plus of the second period, but only converted one to give Dunbar a 38-32 lead at halftime. The Highlanders were 16-of-41 from the foul line in the game.
The Wildcats opened the second half on a 16-6 run.
