A heap of scrap metal at a north side business caught fire Monday afternoon, pumping thick, black smoke into the sky.

No injuries were reported in the fire that was reported at 4:24 p.m. at Texas Industrial, 3800 N. Commerce St.

Firefighters got the blaze under control, but it continued to smolder Monday evening.

The cause was under investigation, said Tim Hardeman, fire department spokesman.

It had plenty of fuel once it got started, he said.

“It’s a very large pile of scrap metal that wasn’t cleaned and still had stuff attached to it,” Hardeman said. “I looked over the fence where our guys are working, and I saw a couple vehicles, so it could have been some vehicle parts.”

Such combustible materials could include tires or interior upholstery.
