Local players named to Star-Telegram Super Team

Mansfield ISD schools were well-represented on the Star-Telegram 2013 Football Super Teams announced recently.

Making the First Team Defense was Legacy linebacker Everett Williams and Timberview defensive back Ed Paris. Both are seniors.

Williams was noted for his 74 tackles, 11 quarterback sacks, nine tackles for loss, three fumble recoveries and four defensive touchdowns.

Paris was credited with 47 tackles, five interceptions, eight pass break-ups and a returned touchdown after an interception.

Name to the Second Team Offense is running back Kijana Amous, Legacy, Sr., 1,751 rushing yards and 27 TDs; lineman Chad Pursley, Legacy, Sr., 28 pancakes, 24 knockdowns, 0 sacks allowed; and kicker Ryan Rodriguez, Summit, Jr.: 26-for-27 PATs, 12-for-16 FGs, long of 41.

The Second Team Defense includes defensive back Brandon Simmons, Timberview, Sr., 64 tackles, five tackles for loss, three sacks, three interceptions (one returned for a score), four forced fumbles; and punter Braden Nolen, Summit, Soph., averaged 38.9 yards on 27 punts with a long of 67, eight inside the 20.

Mansfield hockey preparing for points opportunity

The Mansfield hockey team may have dropped its last game to Plano, 7-0, but following the holiday break, the team has its sights set on picking up more standings points. The squad is now 1-10, but the Jan. 9 game with McKinney will give it a chance to add to their standings total of 2.

McKinney is just 2-6-2 and just ahead of Mansfield in the standings. The game will be played at McKinney South and the puck drops at 8:45 pm.

Holiday tournaments abound

In the Moritz Dealership Tournament at Aledo, Mansfield went 3-1, winning in the consolation finals as the Tigers beat Arlington, 60-49. Their only loss was in the semifinals to Lake Ridge. Lake Ridge went on to lose to Converse Judson 52-49 in the finals.

Mansfield beat Eastern Hills, 63-56, in the first round and Keller Timber Creek, 43-40, in the second round.

The Tigers’ Mich Littlejohn had a good tournament.

Lake Ridge had blowout wins over Abilene, 78-22, Everman, 57-37, and a 20-point win over Mansfield.

Legacy was 3-2 in the tournament with wins over Burleson Centennial, Keller Central and Haltom.

In the Fort Worth ISD Tournament, the Summit boys lost in the consolation finals on a last-second put-back to lose to Houston Christian Life, 62-61. Summit’s Corinthian Ramsey scored 19 points.

Spring Creek Invitational results saw Aledo get past Summit, 40-38, in the semifinals. The Cougars fought back with a win over Galena Park North Shore, 55-54, before losing in the consolation finals to Canyon, 37-33.
